Chapter 3
AFTER THE RAIDS
Additional data continued to surface which further implicated Aum doctors and psychiatrists as the source of Aum's anti-social activities. In the mean time police began to arrest Aum members and take apart the Aum facilities. This data included these reports but was not limited to:
1. Aum spent about 3 billion yen on the development of chemicals, drugs and the manufacturing plant in the Satian no 7 building. 30
2. Niimi confessed to killing ten followers with VX gas who wished to leave.31
3. A video tape was found showing Aum members visiting a military plant and a university weapons research center in Russia in February 1993. The tape showed the members as viewing weapons including bazookas, missiles, and the Aum members asking if such weapons could be bought there. 32
4. Between October 1994 to mid February 1995 about 1,700 grams of the mind altering drug, thiopental, was produced.33
5. Aum had used electric shock therapy and thiopental to cause memory loss. Dr. Hayashi recorded this in his note book.34
6. The Yomouri Shimbun reported that Chizuo Matsumoto, Asahara, had told his construction minister, Kiyode Hayakawa, in around December 1992 - January 1993, that he wanted 1,000 hand guns so that 1,000 members could take key government facilities. This was reported as the testimony of Hayakawa.
7. The development of automatic rifles and bullets was slowed by the find of sarin bi-products by the Yomouri Shimbun, and thus the guns were never developed. However, two semi automatic rifles were found in a hollow pillar hidden around the 7th April 1995. A bazooka and a mortar were also found.35
8. Five Aum members had been killed by thiopental (mind altering drug) overdoses. A total of 33 followers of Aum died since 1988. Twenty were reported to be still missing, two killed themselves and others died in road accidents.36
9. Truth serum (thiopental) and polygraph tests were used by Dr. Hayashi to find out if members could pass a police lie detector test or not. 37
10. The Satian No. 6 building had a nearby basement where large amounts of medical equipment, including syringes and intravenous drips, were found. Phenylacetonnitrite was discovered, which is a base chemical for stimulant and mind altering drugs.
11. Dr. Masayuki Hirata, and Dr. Kenichiro Katahira were prosecuted for imprisoning a girl and an ex-self defense forces official and administering them mind altering drugs.38
12. One aum member was found by the police to have lost 38 kilograms when they found him. Dr. Hirata and Dr. Katahira were found to have used drugs to prevent him from leaving Aum. Dr. Hayashi and Dr. Hirata had kidnapped him, drugged him and placed him in a small room.
13. In June 1995 police arrested Daisuke Watenabe, Sentaro Mori, Tokazu Korugi and Akira Hatayama for making mind altering drugs, including the truth serum drug thiopental, in the Aum compound at Kamikuishiki.39
